Cambodia country profile

Cambodia is a tropical country in Southeast Asia bordering with Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, and the Gulf of Thailand. The country has a population of roughly 17 million, consisting predominantly of Khmer population and Buddhist religion. Internal and international migration is common for people in search of work, education, or marriage. With a GPD/capita of USD 5100 (2023 est.), the country is one of the poorest in East Asia. However, the economy has been growing 5% annually in recent years, and the growth rate is predicted to be increasing, making it one of the fastest growing economies in the region.

The sectors contributing mostly to the economy are tourism and textile/clothing, while agricultural activities remain an important source of income for many Cambodians living in rural areas. Construction, light manufacturing, and real estate sectors are also growing. The country still relies heavily on foreign assistance, totalling approximately 25% of the government’s budget. Cambodia, being part of the WTO, is open for foreign investment but limited supply of skilled labour, inadequate infrastructure, systemic corruption, lack of transparency, and weak regulatory environment have limited investments historically.
